Computer Maintenance Tips
Computer failures can cause unnecessary productivity loss and can be a real hassle. Most computer techs agree that many of the issues that they encounter can be avoided with basic Preventative Maintenance. Physical Maintenance, Systems Maintenance, and Systems Security are all a part of Preventative Maintenance. They will not only assist in avoiding some major issues, but also enhance the performance and overall health and longevity of your computer.
Keeping your PC clean plays a very important role in the life of your computer. Dust build-up may jam fans which leads to overheating. Overheating leads to a slower PC or even worse…frying your computer. A dust-free environment enhances the appearance of your computer and prevents the components from failing. Make sure that the computer is unplugged. Then spray your PC and its components with compressed air to remove dust. One way to sanitize your computer is to wipe down the computer, keyboard, and mouse with a damp cloth.
System Maintenance is also a vital factor in Preventative Care. Your computer system should be updated, cleaned, and defragged to increase speed and reliability. Under BeCloud’s Complete Care, the systems maintenance is handle automatically and monitored by our capable help desk staff. If you’re not covered by BeCloud’s Complete Care, the following are a few methods you can implement for basic systems maintenance:
Let’s start with Disk Defragmenter: It normally runs on a schedule, but you can do this manually as well. This tool rearranges fragmented data on your hard disk to increase access speed. (Although Disk Defrag is great for traditional hard drives, it is not recommended for Solid State Drives (SSD), as this may decrease the lifespan.)
1. Click the Start Menu and type dfrgui in the search bar.
2. Press Enter
3. Select a disk and then click Analyze Disk to analyze
4. Select a disk and then click Defragment Disk in Windows 7 and Optimize in Windows 8 to defrag.
Next, Run Disk Cleanup: This allows you to free up space on your hard drive.
1. Click the Start Menu and type disk cleanup in the search bar.
2. Check the files you want to delete under Files to Delete and click Ok
3. Then Click Delete Files
1. Right click the Start Menu
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click System and Security
4. Click Administration Tools
5. Double-Click Disk Cleanup
6. Select disk to be cleaned (Normally C: )
Task Manager Allows you to end any programs running that you do not need.
1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc
2. Select the task to end, then press End Task.
Systems Security is important because it protects your computer and your data. One way to secure your PC is by updating your anti-virus software. Having updated software helps protect your PC from old and possibly newer malware. You should make sure that the feature for automatic updates is enabled. Also avoid downloading and opening files of unknown or suspicious-looking sources. Further protect your data by backing up your files to an external hard drive. If you are under BeCloud’s Complete Care Agreements, all of the security aspects of updates, scans and checks are automated and monitored.
